Lord’s Taverners Scholarships for Young Athletes with a Disability
Since 2008 the ACT Branch has provided annual scholarships for young aspiring ACT and regional athletes with a disability. The purpose of the scholarships is to provide young athletes with a disability in the age group 12-20 with opportunities to achieve their long term sporting goals. The program is in line with Lord’s Taverners purpose of giving the young and disadvantaged a sporting chance and it has been administered by ACTSPORT and the ACT Branch of the Lord’s Taverners. It complements the Branch’s support for the ACT visually impaired cricket team.
The 2011 scholarship winners are athletes Adam Cunningham , Jaden Sawyer , Lachlan Foote, Elle Tonkin, Bradley Mann, Teagan Kite, Andrew Hoatson, Jack Dirou and Tim Carr
The Lord’s Taverners Scholarship Program will continue for at least a further two years with $7,500 being provided annually for the program. The program will continue to benefit from the excellent administrative support provided by ACTSport.
Rob and Diana Laurie very generously hosted a barbecue for the 2011 scholarship winners and their families early in February 2011 where the winners were awarded their cheques by President, Rob Laurie and Chairman David Nicholls.
In view of the success of the program additional funds have been allocated for the next two years and the 2012 Scholarship applications will be considered later in 2011 and awards presented early in 2012.
Since its inception 30 scholarships have been awarded embracing sports such as athletics, swimming, tennis, judo, basketball and ice skating.
