Lord’s Taverners Scholarships for Young Athletes with a Disability
Since 2008 the ACT Branch has provided annual scholarships for young aspiring ACT and regional athletes with a disability. The purpose of the scholarships is to provide young athletes with a disability in the age group 12-20 with opportunities to achieve their long term sporting goals. The program is in line with Lord’s Taverners purpose of giving the young and disadvantaged a sporting chance and it has been administered by ACTSPORT and the ACT Branch of the Lord’s Taverners. It complements the Branch’s support for the ACT visually impaired cricket team.
The 2011 scholarship winners were athletes Adam Cunningham , Jaden Sawyer , Lachlan Foote, Elle Tonkin, Bradley Mann, Teagan Kite, Andrew Hoatson, Jack Dirou and Tim Carr
The Lord’s Taverners Scholarship Program will continue for the near future with $7,500 being provided annually for the program. The program will continue to benefit from the excellent administrative support provided by ACTSport.
2012 Lord’s Taverners Scholarship
Now in its fifth year the Lord’s Taverners Scholarship Scheme for Young Athletes with a Disability attracted the largest and strongest field of applicants since the program got under way in 2008. The scheme is designed to provide young promising disabled athletes with opportunities to pursue and hopefully achieve, their long term sporting goals .
A number of sports were represented including athletics,table tennis,boxing,futsal and swimming. The range of disabilities included visual impairment,dislexia and cerebral palsy.
Thirteen scholarships were awarded to the young athletes and $7500 was distributed amongst the scholarship winners
Since its inception 43 scholarships have been awarded embracing sports such as athletics, swimming, tennis, judo, basketball, boxing, futsal and ice skating.
