Lord’s Taverners along with Barnardos, Australia-Britain Society, Rotary and English in Australia were invited to a Garden Party at the British High Commissioner’s residence on Tuesday 2 March 2010.  More than 40 Taverners accepted the invitation and were welcomed to Westminster House and taken through to the gardens.

A traditional English afternoon tea was served, the High Commissioner welcomed us; guests mingled or enjoyed sitting at long tables under the marquees in the garden; Taverners and Barnardos committee members circulated selling raffle tickets; Taverners President Rick Forster thanked HE Baroness Amos for her generosity on behalf of the guests and presented her with a wonderful sheath of Australian flowers; Taverner Bob Nattey, wearing his Australia-Britain Society hat, took the opportunity to pay tribute to the late Marjorie Turbayne who actively fostered relations between Britain and Australia; more chatting and eating; raffles were drawn (Taverner prize was a bottle of Penfolds RWT, and Barnardos had three bottle of bubbling Squid Ink); more chatting; and then the party was over.

We are very grateful to Her Excellency (who happens to be a devotee of the game of cricket) and the High Commission for hosting this annual event, as it combines a very pleasant social occasion with fund raising.

Members were again very fortunate to be invited by the British High Commissioner, HE Mrs Helen Liddell, to her Annual Garden Party and Reception held in the garden of her Deakin residence, Westminster House, high above Canberra, looking across to the Brindabella Range in the distance.  Surely one of the best views in Canberra!

A few hundred guests enjoyed the High Commissioner’s hospitality including about 50 Taverners.  Her generosity meant that nearly $2,000 from ticket sales and a raffle was raised for Lord’s Taverners.

The ACT Branch’s 2008 Annual Reception was generously hosted by the High Commissioner for the UK, HE Mrs Helen Liddell, at her residence on 22nd February 2008. Members of a number of worthy associations were the guests of HE for this occasion - those present being in the order of 300.  Over 40 Taverners enjoyed the hospitality of the High Commissioner and Dr Liddell, with the balmy evening weather lending itself to the delightful surroundings of the High Commissioner's garden where we all gathered.  On behalf of all the associations present, the Taverners' President Rick Forster proposed a vote of thanks to the High Commissioner and presented her with a bouquet of Australian flowers.  Never known to miss a fund raising opportunity, Nigel French and Mark De Jager raffled a bottle of Para Port (generously donated by Geoff McGuiness) and raised in the order of $850.
